INFRASTRUCTRE
The Friends of Fonticello Park is actively working with the City of Richmond through the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities to make improvements to the park that are aligned with the needs and vision of the community.
Fonticello Park has seen decades of deferred maintenance due to budget shortfalls and an understaffed Parks department. Thanks to the advocacy of City Councilperson Stephanie Lynch and Council Liaison Amy Robins, Mayor Stoney earmarked $1.75 million in the 2023 budget for Fonticello Park master plan implementation.
The Infrastructure Committee is currently working on suggested amendments to the current master plan that better reflects the changing desires of the community. Priorities have been identified as
- expanding the skate park
- resurfacing the basketball courts and tennis courts
- renovating the building in the center of the park
- removing fencing for the eastern ball field to make it a multi-use sports field for soccer and football
- removing the clay from the eastern ball field to remediate the run-off onto the sidewalk and into the sewer system (ultimately leading to and polluting the James River)
- installing a dog park
- testing the spring
